Infamous blast from village’s past

FIRED by the success of their artwork, villagers are now looking to create a sculpture trail to commemorate some of their other local heroes – including a nun, a shipwrecked Viking and four murdered Irish navvies.

Pilgrims visit Welwick to honour the Venerable Mary Ward (1585 to 1645), in whose name Bar Convent, York, was founded. She spent five years at Plowlands Farm, where her cousins, the Wrights also grew up.
