Injured canoeist hauled up 60ft bank

Fire and rescue crews had to haul an injured canoeist up a 60ft embankment before taking him to hospital with suspected back injuries.

The incident happened at about 6pm yesterday on the River Swale close to the village of Keld, Richmondshire.

Fire and rescue crews from Reeth, Hawes and Richmond attended the incident after the canoeist, said to be in his 40s, was reported to be in difficulty.

The man was stretchered to hospital.
