Inquiry after 15 injured in terrace blast

A MAJOR investigation will continue today into the cause of an explosion which ripped through a row of houses, leaving 15 people injured.

A newly-fitted kitchen is believed to be at the focus of inquiries following the blast in Irlam, Salford, early yesterday.

A pensioner, 82, is being treated for 30 per cent burns after her terrace home was destroyed.

Fourteen other people, including at least four children, also received hospital treatment

The blast, which neighbours described as a "massive booming noise", happened at about 7.15am.

Workers from City West Housing Trust carried out work in the pensioner's kitchen and bathroom the previous day.One man last night told how he pulled himself free of the rubble to find his three children trapped in the ruins.

Around 200 properties were evacuated following the explosion which peppered passers-by with flying glass and debris.Scores of people were last night being put up in temporary accommodation as investigations continued.
