Inquiry into police chief who led Savile probe

Assistant Chief Constable Ingrid Lee faces an inquiry by another police force after the Sunday Telegraph reported that she is the director of an overseas property company with four serving or retired officers from the force.

Nick Gargan, the Chief Constable of Avon and Somerset, will investigate the matter, West Yorkshire Police confirmed yesterday.

He will look at whether Mrs Lees followed guidelines which say business dealings by serving officers must be declared and cannot present an appearance of allowing an officer to be unduly influenced.

Mrs Lee, who oversaw Operation Newgreen, the review into Savile and his relationship with West Yorkshire Police, has not been suspended and there is no suggestion of wrongdoing.

The West Yorkshire force issued a statement which said: “As a result of the information received from the Sunday Telegraph regarding the business interests of a senior officer involved in Operation Newgreen, the Chief Constable of West Yorkshire Police, Mark Gilmore, has requested that the matter be fully and independently investigated by Avon and Somerset Police.

“Chief Constable Nick Gargan has been appointed to independently investigate the matter.”

The force faced criticism over the Operation Newgreen report published earlier this month.

It emerged days later that four five-year-olds had been abused by the disgraced DJ in West Yorkshire and not one as stated by the force.
