Insight into magic of Beatrix Potteras works make rare trip from Lakes

Mark Branagan

A rare opportunity to see some of Beatrix Potter’s original watercolours and drawings will enchant visitors to Nunnington Hall near Helmsley.

The drawings are normally only on display in the Lake District, having been given to the National Trust by Beatrix Potter as part of her Lakeland legacy to the organisation.

Potter became a keen advocate and benefactor of the Trust and left over 4,000 acres of farmland, including her beloved home, Hill Top in Sawrey, to the charity, as well as the largest collection of her published drawings and paintings.

Annabelle Coaten, visitor services manager at Nunnington Hall, said the exhibition featured “a fantastic body of watercolours and drawings that had endeared generations to her stories for over a century.

“We wanted to bring some of the works across to North Yorkshire for people in the area to see.” The exhibition also included pages from an unpublished manuscript never before seen outside the Lake District.

Entitled The Enchanting World of Beatrix Potter, the exhibition will feature about 25 original paintings and drawings and will run until April 25.

A special appearance is planned on Easter Sunday and Easter Monday by Peter Rabbit, Mrs Tiggy-Winkle and Tom Kitten for activities and story-telling.
