Inspectors find signs of better leadership

A secondary school in Yorkshire which was placed in special measures last year has made satisfactory progress but is still not allowed to recruit newly-qualified teachers.

Hatfield Visual Arts College, near Doncaster, was branded as failing by Ofsted during a visit to the school in November, last year.

The education watchdog has now published the results of its first monitoring visit, which took place last month.

Inspectors say improvements have been satisfactory but the school is to remain in special measures.

Their report said the school's leadership had made some progress in improving the quality of teaching and learning, with pupils more engaged in lessons.

It says: "In the short period following the previous inspection, the school leadership has established effective systems to track students' progress and staff are using the information to identify where further support is required.

"As a result, students receive one-to-one and group tuition, as well as time and facilities in order to complete coursework.

"Following last year's results in English and maths the school has revised its examination entrance policy.

"This will reduce early entry to a smaller number of students."
