Insulation scheme set to close this month

KIRKLEES residents have been warned that the district's free home insulation scheme – the "Warm Zone" – will finish at the end of this month.

Staff from the award-winning project have visited all 23 wards of Kirklees over the past three years and insulated 43,000 homes free of charge.

The council-backed scheme is not means tested and everyone is eligible regardless of age, household income or size of property.

Every home in the area has been visited and every householder given the opportunity to get involved. More than 80 per cent – 132,401 – of households in Kirklees have signed up to the scheme.

Now, the leader of Kirklees Council, Councillor Mehboob Khan, is urging everyone else to join.

"This really is the final chance to sign up to the scheme and get the work done for free before it is too late.

"This scheme really has something to benefit everyone in Kirklees. Please sign up and don't get left out in the cold."

The scheme also offers residents free energy-saving light bulbs, home energy reports and carbon monoxide detectors as well as referrals for energy efficiency grants such as those for boiler replacements, benefit and debt advice, fire safety checks, water conservation advice and support for carers.

Clarence and Irene Johnson from Deighton signed up last year and were impressed by the range of services available.

Mr Johnson said: "We felt reassured when talking to Warm Zone that it was all above board and something very worthwhile getting involved in."

The couple say they hope that other residents will take advantage and register for free home insulation.

Mr Johnson added: "We are very happy. Happy with everything... I would recommend signing up. Get it done. All we wanted was a warm home and that's what they have given us."

The Warm Zone project may end on June 30 but information is still available online at www.kirklees.gov.uk/warmzone.
