Investigation launched after air crash in South Yorkshire

The incident happened around noon at the Sandtoft airfield in Belton, in the Isle of Axholme part of north Lincolnshire.

These images show parts of the aeroplane torn off and lying in a field close to the runway.

There is also broken glass and debris spilled across the road next to the airfield.

A spokesman for Sandtoft Airfield confirmed an aircraft had landed short of the runway on a track and that two people were injured while the wreckage was being removed.

The two men on board the aircraft were taken to hospital, one by air ambulance and the other by an ambulance.

Firefighters and police from Humberside also attended the scene but have now left. Fire crews helped to rescue the men with paramedics.

A statement on Humberside Fire and Rescue’s website said the wing and roof of aircraft was removed to assist in removal of casualties on spinal boards.

It added: “One casualty with minor back injuries, taken to hospital by ambulance. Second casualty suffering spinal injury, taken to hospital by air ambulance.”

There were reports that Westgate and Sandtoft Road were closed earlier this afternoon as a result of the incident.

It is understood The Civil Aviation Authority and Air Accidents Investigation Branch have begun an investigation.

Sandtoft is a former RAF airfield.
