Invitation to historic building tour

PEOPLE in the Chapeltown area of Leeds are being encouraged to join a tour of an historic building.

The Chapeltown Heritage Group, along with local councillors Jane Dowson, Mohammed Rafique and Eileen Taylor will be looking round the building of the Northern School of Contemporary Dance, which was built in 1932.

Originally the home of Chapeltown Road New Synagogue, the facility has a large domed Byzantine style design which is one of the most recognised landmarks in the area.

Chapeltown was once the home of a thriving Jewish population in the 1930s, but over the years the number of Jewish people living in the area began to decrease as many families moved further north in the city.

In 1985, the synagogue closed and was bought by Leeds City Council.

In 1987, the Northern School of Contemporary Dance moved into the building and 13 years on has acquired a reputation as a centre of excellence both nationally and internationally.

Following the tour beginning at 6pm on March 2 and lasting for 30 minutes, a short meeting of the Heritage Group will take place.
