Iron ladies rise to challenge

AN idea for a new challenge born out of a famous triathlon finally came to fruition when a group of women completed the Iron Lady.

Last September after a local road race, Alison Mackie, Bramham’s Running and Fit Camp leader, suggested that it would be a great idea for club members to take part in their own version of the Iron Man event.

It would consist of a 1.2-mile swim followed by a 56-mile bike ride and finish with a half marathon covering 70.3 miles in total, or half the official Iron Man distance, which despite its name is open to women.

On Sunday, four women from Bramham Running Club, Nina Batt, Alison Mackie, Kate McIntyre and Sue Jones, above, completed the challenge, supported by 20 swimmers, cyclists and runners from the club who accompanied them along the route. Nina Batt completed all three events in six hours and 55 minutes.
