Jail for Polish man who wanted a better life

A POLISH man who left another lying in the street unconscious with serious injuries has been jailed for two years eight months.

Leeds Crown Court heard Andrzej Selwa punched his victim Tomasz Szpytam once in the face after losing his temper when they met in Wakefield.

Mr Szpytam fell to the ground striking his head and remembered nothing until waking up in hospital hours later.

Shamaila Quereshi, prosecuting, said he was found to have a fractured skull, fractured cheekbone and broken nose.

Jonathan Devlin, representing Selwa, said it was a spontaneous reaction to what he considered was verbal abuse and he had not expected his punch to be so hard or have such serious consequences.

Selwa, 27 of Duke of York Street, Wakefield, admitted inflicting grievous bodily harm in July last year.

Jailing him Judge Sally Cahill QC said the offence had occurred within almost a month of him moving to England to try for a better life.

She said CCTV showed it was Selwa who stepped forward and struck a very aggressive and hard punch before he and his friends moved on leaving the other man lying unconscious on the ground.
