Jamie Oliver dishes up plans for his third cookery school

CAMPAIGNING chef Jamie Oliver's quest to improve the nation's diet is hitting Leeds.

His Ministry of Food project is to open in Kirkgate market, and will provide a cookery school where people can learn how to make healthy meals on a budget.

It will be the third such project after Rotherham and Bradford, but the first to be based in a market. Classes will use ingredients sourced from the market itself.

Current formats for Ministry of Food sessions in Rotherham and Bradford consist of a morning and afternoon lesson divided by a lunch time demonstration for the public, and a similar format may be introduced in Leeds.

Ten-week cookery courses will be delivered in a specially developed kitchen by staff trained by Jamie Oliver's team.

Courses start with tuition in boiling an egg and conclude with the perfect Sunday roast.

The idea is that participants will pass on what they have learned to family and friends.

Leeds Council and NHS Leeds have teamed up to create the market facility for the project.

Emma Croft, who is an obesity, food and physical activity specialist at NHS Leeds said: "I am delighted that the Ministry of Food project is coming to Leeds. The project will be a great addition to the city, the market and all those that use it.

"Ministry of Food is all about getting people cooking again and to show that anyone can learn to cook healthy and nutritious meals on a budget.

"All the recipes demonstrated on site will use produce which will be mostly bought from stalls in the market. This will support the sustainability of Kirkgate market and ensure that people on the cookery courses can get everything they need to make the same meals at home."

The project is expected to be launched in the summer.
