Japanese teacher organises event to help quake victims

A fundraising event being held tomorrow will raise money for the victims of Japan’s earthquake and tsunamai.

The highlight of the event at the University of Hull will be a Japanese tea ceremony demonstrated by two instructors and a chance to speak Japanese and slip on a kimono.

Organiser Japanese language teacher Tomoko Miyairi has been in the city a decade and considers it her home, but wants to do something to help the country of her birth. Ms Tomoko, whose family lives in Tokyo, said people were concerned about radiation from the damaged Fukushima nuclear plant but her parents were staying calm.

Ms Tomoko said anyone who was interested in going along should go to the Students Union between 1pm and 4pm tomorrow. She said: “I don’t expect to raise large amounts of money; my intention is that people come and join and experience something new about Japanese society and culture. All the money will go to the British Red Cross.”

The magnitude-9.0 earthquake triggered a tsunami off the east coast of Japan leaving more than more than 12,000 people dead and thousands more injured. More than 13,000 are still reported missing by Japanese authorities after towns and cities were ruined by the force of the disaster.
