Jealous lover who stabbed girlfriend to death after she ended relationship is jailed for life

A JEALOUS man stabbed his Polish girlfriend 30 times after she ended their relationship, killing her with a second knife after his first stuck in her hand as she defended herself.

Weronika Gospodarczyk, 23, first met her killer Colin Campbell on a school exchange trip, and later began an affair with him after bumping into him by chance at a nightclub when she returned to the UK.

But in what a judge called "a mix of resentment, self-pity and mounting fury" Campbell used two kitchen knives to stab her in the neck, face and chest when she said she no longer wanted to see him. Sheffield Crown Court heard that when one knife stuck in his victim's hand, Campbell, 29, got another to finish the job. He was arrested at the scene after neighbours heard screaming and called police.

Campbell, of Seabrook Road, Norfolk Park, Sheffield, was jailed for life yesterday, and ordered to serve a minimum of 15 years after admitting murder.

Prosecutor Fiona Swain said he had met his victim when she first visited Sheffield in 2005 and became her boyfriend when she returned in 2007 to study at Hallam University.

After going to Poland for her summer holidays last year she returned in September to their shared flat where she was killed, suffering 44 separate wounds in the attack in which she was also punched and kicked.

Campbell told police: "I just started stabbing her on her neck and body. I just kept stabbing more and lost it."

Adrian Waterman QC, for Campbell, said his client was still "mystified" at what happened.

Judge Mrs Justice Rafferty told him: "This was an attack, founded in resentment and jealousy on a young woman you sought to possess."

The Gospodarczyk family said it "has been left with turmoil, sadness, anger, distress and helplessness and they are feelings which will never end."
