Jessica Ennis tells of ‘surreal’ side to fame

Have your say

Olympian Jessica Ennis has revealed she was too embarrassed to pop into a chip shop after seeing huge photos of herself plastered all over the place.

The Sheffield gold medal-winning heptathlete was the London 2012 poster girl with images of her in sporting action displayed across the UK.

She told BBC1 presenter Graham Norton: “Seeing big billboards was madness.

“One night I went to get fish
and chips and there was a massive poster of me doing crunches
and I couldn’t go in so turned around and went to the supermarket.”

She said her celebrity was “great fun but really surreal”.

Ennis, who is in the running for the BBC’s sports personality of the year award, said it has been a struggle to return to her gruelling training regime.

“The Olympics were the absolute highlight of my career but I still think I have more to achieve,” she said.

“Getting back into winter training has been hard and I was thinking ‘Why am I doing this?’ – but I have to refocus and set different goals.

“Rio is the long-term plan. I am sticking to heptathlon for the next few years but looking forward to going into one event. Training will be easier.”
