The international chart-topping singer songwriter, who was one of the musicians to close last year’s Olympics in London, joined the star-studded bill which also included Take That frontman Gary Barlow, US singer Mary J Blige, the cast of the hit West End musical Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, Dame Edna Everage and jazz musician Caro Emerald.

Olympic champions Torvill and Dean, who will soon be celebrating the 30th anniversary of their record breaking Olympic Gold medal performance of Ravel’s Bolero, also joined the line-up.

Liverpool comic John Bishop was the host of the evening, the 101st show which will be screened on ITV in December.

Speaking before the show, Jessie J, who also performed at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Concert, said: “I have watched the Royal Variety Show since I was a little girl and always dreamt of being on it. It will be a real special moment for me. I can’t wait.”

The Essex-born performer, who teamed her daring top with stylish high-waisted white trousers, was one of those to greet the royal couple on their arrival at the London Palladium, standing alongside Arabella Mansfield, who gave the programme to the Royals.

The Duchess of Cornwall, who also received a bouquet of flowers, shimmered in a glamorous deep blue silk dress by British designer Vivienne Westwood. Bishop, 46, said: “To host a show with such heritage is something I never imagined I would do.”
