Jobs to go as steel buildings business shuts

Steel giant Tata is to close one of its UK businesses, threatening 180 job losses.

The firm intends to cease operations at its Living Solutions site in Shotton, North Wales, a business which was set up in 2003 to make modular buildings for the construction industry.

Andrew Black, managing director of Tata Steel Building Systems, said it proposed to withdraw from the business with regret.

Living Solutions was set up as a pilot venture to explore a non-core business prospect, he said, but given a weak construction market and the impending completion of a contract for the defence sector, Living Solutions was unable to establish enough market presence to justify its continuing.

It had never been profitable, Mr Black added..

He paid tribute to everyone who worked hard to try to develop the business.

Tata said the announcement did not affect its other businesses at Shotton.
