Jobs on government contract must be advertised locally says MP

Private companies taking on Government contracts must advertise the jobs needed to do the work in their local area, a Labour MP said yesterday.

Andrew Gwynne put forward a Private Member’s Bill which stated any firm taking on public sector work must advertise the jobs close to the site where the work was to be carried out.

The MP for Denton and Reddish said Whitehall departments also needed to know they could demand companies taking on Government contracts employ apprentices. Putting forward his Apprenticeships and Skills (Public Procurement Contracts) Bill in the Commons, he said only firms winning contracts in excess of £1m could be asked to employ
apprentices.

Mr Gwynne said: “My Bill would ensure all apprenticeships, offered as part of a public procurement contract, would have
to be advertised to all local workers.

“We know that in our communities it is often public procurement that is the big spender and by using that money more wisely to help lift the job opportunities, the skills, the ambitions of young
people.

“The measures will have a big impact in cities like Birmingham in driving up the ambitions and skills of young people.” But Tory MP Jacob Rees-Mogg (North East Somerset) said the Bill may break European Union law.
