Jobs hope as Meadowhall moves to extend food court

MEADOWHALL shopping centre has drawn up plans to extend its Oasis food court – a move which will create about 80 jobs.

The works will involve converting about 340 sq m of the existing management centre offices, which are above the Oasis, to make room for one additional restaurant and extend another. About 650 sq m of extra space for chairs and tables would also be created by extending the floor of the upper level into what is currently a "void" above the central seating area.

Downstairs in the Oasis, one end of The Lanes shopping precinct would be blocked off to make room for a restaurant extension.

The plans are set to be agreed at a meeting of Sheffield Council's planning board on Monday, November 15.

The report set to go before that meeting says: "The operators of the shopping centre consider the food court, which is heavily themed on Orchard Square in Marbella, is feeling dated. In addition, some of the operators are very successful and demand more space.

"The works are therefore intended to meet tenants' needs, allow for new tenants and create a more contemporary design.

"Other works will be undertaken to create a more contemporary theme to the Oasis, such as providing more modern and open shop fronts to the takeaway units and upgrading the seating, but these works do not require planning permission.

"There are expected to be approximately 80 additional staff employed as a result of the development."

Councillors have been advised by officers to approve the plans at Monday's meeting.
