Joint efforts keepbutcher birds safe

Rare "butcher birds" beat the attentions of egg thieves to nest in England for the first time in 18 years, say conservationists.

A red-backed shrike has successfully raised its young after volunters for several bird charities kept watch to deter convicted egg collectors seen in the area. The birds, who get their gruesome nickname from impaling prey on spikes, have been under close watch on Dartmoor since May to guarantee their safety.
