Judge blocks deportation of kidney patient

A JUDGE has blocked the deportation of a severely-ill woman living in Yorkshire pending an appeal against her return to Nigeria.

Roseline Akhalu was due to be deported next week but the High Court yesterday ordered her immediate release from detention.

She was diagnosed with kidney disease months after arriving in the UK to study at Leeds University in 2005.

After completing her studies, she was told by immigration chiefs to return to Nigeria but following the intervention of doctors and supporters in Leeds she was allowed to stay and was given a kidney transplant.

Two years later, she faced further action to remove her despite claims she would face serious difficulties receiving the medical care that she needs in her home country.

Leeds North West Lib Dem MP Greg Mulholland yesterday welcomed the ruling and said he planned to write to the Home Secretary expressing “grave concerns” over the handling of the case which he claimed had “wasted considerable amounts of taxpayers’ money”.

Her latest appeal against deportation will be heard on July 24.
