Judges praise historic city's tourism sites

THE best and brightest tourism hotspots in York, which help to attract seven million visitors to the city every year, have been praised by judges at a prestigious awards ceremony.

Among the 14 winners at the Visit York's annual Tourism Awards last night were York Maze, named best visitor attraction, and the Feversham Arms Hotel at Helmsley, which took the coveted title of best hotel.

Eco-friendly retreat Dovecote Barns was voted top self catering accommodation, while best visitor experience went to the Ebor Festival at York racecourse.

Archbishop of York Dr John Sentamu was named ambassador for the city for his role in putting York on the map.

Visit York chairman John Yeomans said: "The Archbishop has contributed greatly to raising the profile of the city and we're delighted he has accepted this award in recognition of the work he does both in York and across the globe. The care that these businesses take in providing first class products and services will help Visit York to ensure the city's tourism economy goes from strength to strength."
