From junk to art as rubbish picked up from streets is given makeover

And now he has crafted the odds and ends into a collection of

sculptures on show at his Dross - Art from Rubbish exhibition at Bassetlaw Museum.

Mr Spencer said: "They are mainly made of plastic collected around Retford. I will go and walk and collect anything that catches my eye, and then use these pieces to make maybe one object or three or four.

"I don't use glue or any other bonding materials, and I'm not allowed to bend or alter them."

The artist, who lives in Retford developed his unusual style in Brighton while on the lookout for free materials to work with.

He said: "I'm quite aware that you don't see people picking things off the ground unless it's money or their job.

"So, often, I will get people looking at me strangely. On at least one occasion I've been verbally abused because it looks like I'm picking up cigarette butts.

"I'm a Christian and it's got some kind of bearing on the art I do, as it's taking these unwanted things and making something beautiful out of them – that reflects how God takes people and makes them beautiful."

The exhibition is on show until Saturday, September 4.
