Jury sworn in for UDM theft trial

A jury has been sworn in to try two mining union officials accused of stealing more than £148,000 from a miners’ charity and a nursing home.

Neil Greatrex and Mick Stevens, the ex-president and Nottinghamshire general secretary of the Union of Democratic Mineworkers (UDM), both denied 14 counts of theft at Nottingham Crown Court.

Greatrex and Stevens, both 60, are accused of stealing approximately £52,000 from the Nottinghamshire Miners Home charity.

It is further alleged that Greatrex, from Stanley, Nottinghamshire, and Stevens, of Rufford Park, Newark, stole credit balances totalling around £96,000 from the Phoenix Nursing and Residential Home near Skegness, Lincolnshire.

Jurors selected to try the case were required to complete a questionnaire asking them if they had any connections with the UDM.
