Keeping audiences glued is a piece of cake

Singers and supporters of Opera North gathered to celebrate the first birthday of the Howard Assembly Rooms in Leeds.

Soprano Anne Sophie Duprels, who stars as Mimi in La Bohme, which opens at Leeds Grand Theatre tonight, plunged the knife into a commemorative cake. The cake was a miniature three dimensional version of the venue, complete with stained glass windows.

Over the last 12 months, the Howard has hosted more than 80 events, from audiences with Armando Iannucci and Rory Bremner to world music from Tuvan throat singers Huun-Huur-Tu, as well as talks and sound and light installations.

Richard Ashton, general manager of the Howard Assembly Room, said: "2010 sees a bigger and bolder programme – with an average of two-and-a-half different performances per week, a month-long art installation in February, new faces coming to perform and new partnerships to foster."
