Keeping an eye on the Minster

A GROTESQUE of the patron saint of York is the latest addition to the city's Minster as part of attempts to preserve the world-famous building.

The statue of St William, a former Archbishop of York, has been created by stone carver Matt Hodgkinson in the Minster Stoneyard near the cathedral. The new bust will now sit on the Minster's North Choir Pinnacles above the stained-glass window of York's patron saint.

William Fitzherbert was unusually appointed to the position of the Archbishop of York on two separate occasions during the 12th century after a dispute with Cistercian monks over his initial election.
