AN EDUCATION conference in Yorkshire will hear keynote speeches over the next two days from high-profile figures on the need for policies to be based on research evidence of what works in the classroom.

Dr Mary Bousted, general secretary of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers, will address the Institute for Effective Education (IEE) Conference at York University tomorrow and Shadow Education Secretary Tristram Hunt will speak at the event on Friday.

Dr Bousted, a member of the university’s education department from 1991 to 1997, will discuss how to use evidence in practice.

Mr Hunt will talk about how researchers, policy makers, and teachers should work together to ensure research evidence is used across the education system.

Professor Bette Chambers, director of the IEE, said: “We look forward to hearing how practitioners, policy makers and researchers are helping get evidence used in schools. IEE’s aim is to improve education for all children, by researching “what works” in teaching and learning.”
