Killer terrified woman and attacked police in ‘bizarre’ crime spree

Christopher Alanazy, 31, was three times the drink-drive limit when he committed the offences in Huddersfield on June 11, this year. Leeds Crown Court heard that Alanazy, who has served a sentence for manslaughter, threatened a taxi driver with a knife after he picked him up in the Newsome area.

Mehran Nassiri, prosecuting, said the cabbie was “petrified” when Alanazy told him he had killed someone. The driver feared for his life and managed to get out of the vehicle and run away.

Alanazy took the keys from the ignition and walked into a house where a woman was alone in the property.

Mr Nassiri told the court that the woman did not know Alanazy and said he was scaring her. Alanazy walked up to the woman and kissed her before asking her for a cigarette.

The woman told him he could have one if they went outside but she locked him out when he stepped through the doorway. The victim contacted police who had already been alerted by the taxi driver’s firm.

Alanazy then got back into the taxi and drove away. The vehicle was fitted with a tracker which enabled police to locate it. The defendant swerved the vehicle into a police car, causing a head-on collision.

Mr Nassiri said two officers suffered extensive whiplash injuries and had to be taken to hospital by ambulance. Alanazy was eventually arrested when he crashed the taxi.

Alanazy, of Ashenhurst Rise, Newsome, Huddersfield, pleaded guilty to making threats to kill, aggravated vehicle taking, sexual assault, attempting to commit grievous bodily harm with intent and drink driving. The 31-year-old has previous convictions for violence and sexual assault dating back to when he was a youth, the court was told.

Michael Walsh, mitigating, described the offences as “bizarre” and said his client accepted that he would be facing a lengthy prison sentence.

Alanazy had lapsed in taking his medication for mental health problems and his problems had been made worse by his excessive consumption of alcohol.

Judge James Spencer QC said: “It is an extremely alarming case because of your previous convictions and I regard the whole sequence of events as extremely serious.”

Alanazy was also ordered to sign the sex offenders’ register for seven years.
