Labour MP wants answers over impact of voting reform

A LABOUR MP has called for more research into the impact of potential voting changes after rebelling against Gordon Brown's plan to ditch the first-past-the-post system.

Former Minister Meg Munn, MP for Sheffield Heeley, said she would have backed a referendum which gave voters more choice, but objected to the fact it will include only the choice of changing to an alternative vote system, where people rank candidates in order of preference.

She was one of only three Labour MPs to vote against the referendum, although many more abstained.

Ms Munn called for some "proper research" to be carried out into what impact changing the system would have on voters' behaviour and their attitude to politics.
