Labour ‘must help’ save centre

OPPOSITION councillors are calling on Labour to step in at the 11th hour to save Hull Carers’ Centre.

A £1.5m contract to provide a carers’ service was handed to NHS body, City Health Care Partnership (CHCP) on Friday, despite an impassioned protest campaign.

At Thursday’s full council meeting Lib Dem councillor Dave McCobb will move a motion calling for council leader Steve Brady to intervene. He said: “Saving the centre is not political; it is simply the right thing to do. Even when the council was making cuts in 2011, funding was found to protect the Carers Centre. It really is that important.”

Labour portfolio holder Rilba Jones last week admitted that the NHS funded over 80 per cent of the grant and they “had to work in partnership with the NHS”.

Hull Council said CHCP offered “the highest spend on services to support carers and the lowest spend on administration costs.”

CHCP said: “The Carers Information and Support Service is a natural progression of the high quality services that we already deliver in the local community. We place significant emphasis on partnership and securing solid working relationships and are looking forward to getting started.”
