Land transfer bid to boost allotments

HEBDEN Royd Town Council could be given a parcel of land by Calderdale Council for the benefit of allotment users following a meeting of the cabinet on Monday.

The council has asked for the transfer of the land at Banksfield Estate, Mytholmroyd, which contains six plots.

A report says Hebden Royd has a ''proactive approach to allotment provision'' and Robin Tuddenham, director for safer and stronger communities, said: ''Transferring Banksfield allotment site to Hebden Royd Town Council at nil value will enable the town council to manage allotment provision to better suit the needs of the local community.''

If the land is transferred then Hebden Royd will become responsible for the management of the waiting list for allotments within Hebden Royd and Mr Tuddenham said care would have to be taken to give non-Hebden Royd residents equal opportunity to obtain a site.

He said: ''A Parish Council is obliged to select only persons resident within their area. There are currently 60 people on the waiting list for an allotment at Banksfield, of whom 49 live in Hebden Royd.''
