Landlords at roadshow in bid to raise standards

TENANTS living in private rented accommodation in the Selby area will benefit from the success of a campaign involving council chiefs and landlords to improve standards.

More than 70 local landlords attended a Selby Council-run roadshow as part of a drive to improve quality in rented accommodation by working with landlords across the district.

The free event at Selby Town Hall, run in partnership with the National Landlord Association, enabled landlords to speak directly to experts about key issues, including health and safety, financial advice and energy efficiency.

Workshops included talks on tax and finance, safety and damp and mould. The aim was to give them the necessary support to deliver the best quality housing for local tenants.

Coun Gillian Ivey, who chairs the Council's Social Board, said: "The event was extremely well attended. I was delighted to welcome so many people there and the feedback from the event was highly positive.

"Selby District Council ran this event because we are committed to raise standards and improve the quality of rented accommodation in the area – part of an ongoing commitment to encourage healthier communities.

"We aim to build on this event in the future by looking at other ways in which we can help private landlords get the information they need to work effectively and efficiently.

"With this information we can all work together to provide high quality rented accommodation in the housing market in this area."

Sandra Widdrington, who chairs Selby Landlords' Association and owns Jigsaw Letting, said: "Everyone involved really deserves a pat on the back.

"All the landlords I spoke to really enjoyed workshops, found them very informative and helpful. It really is something that is very good for Selby and I'd like to see more of in the future."

The council also runs a Landlord Accreditation Scheme to recognise those private landlords who offer the highest quality accommodation. For more details visit www.selby.gov.uk
