Larkin's toads provide scholastic inspiration in anniversary year

A PROGRAMME of events to mark the 25th anniversary of the death of poet Philip Larkin has resulted in an educational spin-off for schools in Hull and the East Riding.

Packs based on poetry, literacy, creative writing, art and conservation are being delivered to secondary and primary schools, along with a 32cm high plastic toad which children will be encouraged to decorate.

The packs are based on Larkin's poems Toads and Toads Revisited, inspiration for the Larkin with Toads project, which will see 40 giant toads erected around Hull as part of Larkin 25.

, 25 of the schools will work with one of five Creative Partnerships' practitioners, who will each spend five days with five schools.

The project is a collaboration between organisers of Larkin 25, Creative Partnerships, and Hull and East Riding Councils.

Creative Partnerships director Tess Parker said: "It is about engaging pupils and teachers in the world of literature through varied creative approaches.

"The resource pack will add value to Hull and East Riding's existing literacy development schemes by offering a springboard for a range of learning and creative activities covering creative writing generally, nature and conservation, and the city and its environs."
