Last of the snow for now – but threat of flooding looms large as big freeze ends

The last of the current wintry weather was due overnight, with up to seven inches of snow falling over high ground.

Forecasters warned of the risk of flooding from today, as heavy rain moves in and rising temperatures spark a rapid thaw of the built-up snow and ice.

The AA also advised drivers to beware of potholes caused or made worse by the thaw.

Temperatures will steadily rise to an average of 4C before reaching more than 10C in the south tomorrow.

It will come too late for many amateur sporting fixtures, with both Leeds and Bradford councils announcing cancellations because of the weather.

In Sheffield residents whose bins had been uncollected were told to leave them out as they could be emptied this weekend.

An Environment Agency spokesman said: “Emergency teams will be out in force throughout the weekend to shore up defences, monitor river levels and clear blockages from watercourses. Those in areas at risk should check the Environment Agency website for the latest information and sign up for free flood warnings [there].”
