AT LAST: Village club takes cricket trophy

Sessay of the York Senior League celebrated their finest hour at the home of cricket yesterday.

Thirty-four years after defeat in their only previous appearance in the npower National Village Cup final at Lord's, Sessay lifted the trophy – held by captain Stephen Langstaff – after a seven-wicket win against Oxfordshire side Shipton-under-Wychwood. Mark Wilkie was named man of the match after top-scoring with 78, but fittingly 55-year-old John Flintoff, who missed the final in 1976 through injury, was there at the end watching partner Nick Harrison stroke the winning four.
