Latest chapter in St Peter's long history as new head is appointed

ONE of the oldest schools in the country has announced the appointment of a new headmaster who will take up the post in September.

Leo Winkley will join St Peter's School, in York, from Bedales School in Hampshire where he is currently the managing head teacher.

in December who left the independent sector to become the principal of a new state-funded academy in Preston.

Mr Winkley, who has been at Bedales since 2004, following previous senior roles at Cheltenham Ladies' College, and Ardingly College, said: "I am thrilled to be taking on the leadership of St Peter's, a forward-looking school with a long and illustrious history.

"My family and I are very excited to be moving to

York and I look forward to getting to know the pupils, parents and staff of the three schools."

St Peter's School, which was founded in AD 627 by St Paulinus, the first Archbishop of York, also includes St Olave's preparatory school for eight to 13-year-olds and Clifton Pre-Preparatory School.
