The LGA consultation will run for eight weeks from July 31 and the LGA will publish its findings ahead of the Government’s green paper in the autumn.

It follows a Yorkshire Post investigation which found that councils in the region were underpinning the billion-pound burden of adult social care by dipping into emergency reserves to the tune of almost £80m this year.

Yorkshire Councils were spending huge chunks of their budgets on adult social care with one, North Yorkshire, spending 42 per cent of its total budget. Altogether authorities will spend £1.5bn this year alone on vulnerable older people.
