A spokesman said: "We are currently dealing with an incident on the A1(M) at J53 Scotch Corner, which will involve delays to road users.

"The road is currently closed in both directions, with traffic diverted via the exit and entry sliproads. Long distance traffic going to/from the North East should consider using the A168 and A19.

"Please avoid the area and be patient - closing the road is not a decision taken lightly, but this is for the safety of all concerned."
