Yorkshire’s rudest place names... and why you’re sitting pretty in Slack Bottom

RESIDENTS of streets with risqué-sounding names in Yorkshire can rest assured their properties retain their value despite research suggesting there might be bargains to be had if a road name raises a titter.

A national study by website NeedaProperty.com found properties on streets with innuendo-laden names like Turkey Cock Lane in Essex and Fanny Hands Lane in Lincolnshire were likely to be sold for less than other homes situated nearby.

All of which might have been cause for concern for residents of the likes of Golden Butts Road in Ilkley or Slack Bottom in Hebden Bridge.

But not so, according to Mark Manning, sales director of regional estate agents Manning Stainton, whose response suggested the findings were little more than poppycock.

“The name is absolutely irrelevant to the price of a house on that street”, he said. “It’s all about location. If a street is in the right place and has the right properties it will be worth just as much as the street next to it.”

The survey had indicated properties on streets with potentially embarrassing names were likely to be around one fifth or £84,000 cheaper on average than other homes situated nearby.

Yorkshire people have previously revealed a touching attachment to local street names with residents in Castleford objecting to the renaming of an underpass known for generations as Tickle Cock Bridge.
