Latest work by young composer from Yorkshire to be broadcast by the BBC

A 17-year-old Yorkshire composer will have his latest work broadcast by the BBC and has been promised a commission for another one.

Jonathan Woolgar, from Pontefract, is one of the winners of this year's BBC Proms Young Composers Competition and his work, Dead Sea Scrolls, will be performed by the Aurora Orchestra at the Royal College of Music and broadcast on Radio 3 on Friday, August 6. He will also be invited to take part in another BBC project, still to be announced.

He is a student at Chetham's School of Music in Manchester and in March this year the Manchester Camerata premired one of his works at the Bridgewater Hall, as a result of success in the Manchester Composers' Project. His ballet, Sinbad, is being performed at The Hammond School, Chester this summer. He hopes to continue his musical studies at university next year.

One of the judges of the BBC competition, Fraser Trainer, described Dead Sea Scrolls as "a compelling piece which unearths an array of colours and character from only a few instruments and the sign of a very mature and talented young composer".

Past winners include Thomas Hewitt Jones, now a professional composer, and Alissa Firsova, who has a new work in this year's Proms programme.
