Launch of 12-year vision to tackle deprivation on coast

AN ACTION plan to regenerate one of North Yorkshire’s most deprived areas over the next 12 years is being unveiled this week to boost job opportunities and tackle unemployment.

The vision to breathe new life into Eastfield, on the outskirts of Scarborough, has been developed over the last 18 months by a partnership of residents and public and private sector organisations delivering services in the area.

The plan aims to address the problems of deprivation in the neighbourhood and create opportunities for local people from the development at Middle Deepdale, which is the largest proposed housing scheme in North Yorkshire. The blueprint, which will run until 2024, will be officially launched on Thursday at an event at Eastfield library.

Scarborough Borough Council’s portfolio holder for neighbourhood renewal, community involvement and partnerships, Coun Brian Simpson, is also the chairman of Eastfield Parish Council.

He said: “The launch of this plan marks and important milestone in the history of Eastfield. The aspirations and ideas contained within it, combined with the enthusiasm and commitment of our local residents and partner organisations, mean the future looks very bright and holds a wealth of possibilities for us all. The plan acts as a blueprint for Eastfield’s future and together we can build a neighbourhood, which we can continue to be proud of for ourselves and future generations.”

The Eastfield district ranks among the top 10 per cent of the nation’s most deprived communities, and has been blighted by long-term unemployment and a lack of job opportunities.

The multi-million pound Middle Deepdale scheme was first mooted more than 15 years and it will see up to 1,350 homes as well as a primary school, flats for the elderly, retail units and public parks.

The action plan’s official launch will take place at 3pm, and details will be on display to the public until 7pm.
