Leader reshuffles shadow cabinet

SHEFFIELD Council's shadow cabinet has been reshuffled following the appointment of a new leader for the group.

Coun Julie Dore was elected to lead the second biggest group on the council earlier this month and has now made some changes to her front bench team.

Burngreave councillor and former Lord Mayor Jackie Drayton will now speak for Labour on children’s services and lifelong learning, with her previous role as culture and tourism spokesman being taken up by Beighton councillor Helen Mirfin-Boukouris.

Coun Dore said “I’m delighted that Jackie and Helen have accepted these roles. Jackie is an experienced councillor, who I know is committed to education in the widest context.

“It’s a welcome return for Helen who did a great job as Labour’s environment spokesman two years ago. As the new Labour leader I look forward to working hard with this strong shadow cabinet.”

Sheffield’s Labour group was joined by Coun Ben Curran last Friday.

Coun Curran, who represents the Walkley ward, was elected as a Lib Dem in May, but defected after speaking of his “disappointment” with the Lib Dems nationally.
