BBC Look North’s Harry Gration got the race underway along with eight-year-old James Driver from Rothwell who suffers from Cerebral Palsy.

James was told he would never walk or talk but defied doctors’ expectations by taking part in the Arena Group Junior and Mini Run at the Jane Tomlinson’s Leeds Half Marathon in May.

Just after 9.30am, the first runners began to cross the finish line to a rapturous reception from the assembled crowd.

Speaking after the race, first placed lady Chloe Ryall, 29, from East Ardlsey, Leeds, who finished in a time of 40 minutes 30 seconds, said: “I was second place lady right up to the end and people in the crowd were telling me so I just thought ‘come on!’ and it gave me that extra push.”

He said: “I have been running around 75 miles per week to train for this and I was hoping to do well but I wasn’t expecting to finish first. It’s still sinking in!”
