Leeds: Fire crews save 30 cows in barn blaze

Firefighters managed to save 30 cows after a fire broke out in their barn - and they fought the blaze while the cows were still inside.

The incident happened shortly after 3am today at Ingfield Farm, Arthington, near Pool in Wharfedale.

Crews from Moortown, Cookridge and Rawdon attended and tackled the fire for about three hours.

One firefighter said: “We had to formulate a backup plan and that involved demolishing a wall and putting a gate over a ditch, so if we did have to evacuate the cows, we could do so. However, only half the barn was involved in fire and the cows were in the other half. They were pretty calm about the whole thing, we used fans to make sure they were away from smoke while we fought the fire.”

The fire is believed to have spread from a farm vehicle parked in the 10m by 25m building.
