Two vans were in collision with each other and about a hundred yards further on a motorcyclist in his 50s was on the road in the middle lane.

Fire crews from three stations were mobilised to the incidents but only Morley arrived at the scene, closely followed by ambulance crews.

A fire service spokesman said: “When we arrived all three carriageways were blocked, we had to use the emergency hard shoulder to get through. One van had gone into the back of another and about a hundred yards down the road was a motorcycle with the rider on the middle lane. He was receiving first aid when we arrived and was later taken to hospital.”

It is thought his injuries were not life threatening. No-one else was involved in the incident.

The motorway was closed for about an hour.
