Now, in its 100th year in existence, the Leeds Male Voice Choir is on the hunt for new singers as part of its birthday celebrations.

The free open rehearsal will give singers the chance to try out for the choir, as well as to learn new vocal techniques.

The auditions will be held on Thursday January 28.

Formed in Middleton in 1916 as the Broom Excelsior Male Voice Choir, the early membership was comprised of colliery workers. It changed its name to the Leeds Male Voice Choir in 1932 and has over the years performed all over Europe.

Rob Butler, of the choir, said: “We’re keen to encourage more men to try singing with us and enjoy the buzz of singing in a group. For those that are keen to join the choir, there is the chance to take part in our year of celebrations including a performance in Leeds Town Hall with The White Rosettes and Rothwell Temperance Band this September”.

The choir has been under the direction of celebrated composer and choral conductor Tim Knight for two years.

“We’ve got a track record of encouraging men of all ages and backgrounds to try singing with us and developing them into fine group of singers” said Mr Knight.

“Whether you’re an established singer or keen to try singing for the first time, you can look forward to a fun evening in a relaxed and friendly environment”.

Mr Butler added: “We are convinced that anyone attending will have a great evening and discover how much fun singing can be.”

The open rehearsal takes place at 7.30pm at the Yorkshire College of Music and Drama, St Marks Avenue, Woodhouse.
