James Brewer, who is a computer programmer, is cycling 230miles, walking and running 27miles and swimming another five miles through a series of triathlons, half marathons, bike rides and mountain treks.

The 28-year-old’s efforts were inspired by stories coming out of the Syrian civil war, which has displaced and killed hundreds of thousands of people.

He is hoping to raise £1,500 for relief charity SOS Children’s Villages, which supports thousands of children and families affected by the crisis through food, shelter and education.

“I kind of felt that the response in the UK wasn’t really adequate to the problem out there,” he said. “I thought I would raise a bit of money to help.

“It is an incredibly worthy charity, helping some of the most innocent vulnerable children on Earth.”

Mr Brewer, who used to live in Leeds city centre but is now London-based, started his series of challenges with a ‘weekend triathlon’ that saw him swim 5km in a pool, cycle from London to Brighton and run the Ranelagh Richmond Half Marathon in late April.

Since then he has cycled the Alpe D’huez climb in the French Alps, completed two Olympic distance triathlons and cycled 118 miles from Dieppe to Paris.

He will complete his self-funded challenge series with a climb up Mount Toubkal in Morocco on September 16 and 17.
