Leeds at '˜standstill' after road closed

The carriageway reopened at around 11am but lengthy delays continued to affect surrounding areas.

Police said the accident occurred shortly before 7am when a Nissan Micra came off the A643.

Its 22-year-old female driver was cut free from the car by firefighters and taken to Leeds General Infirmary with injuries that were described as non life-threatening.

At the height of the incident, traffic queues were reported on routes including the A64 York Road, A65 Kirkstall Road and the A6110 Leeds Outer Ring Road between Butt Lane in Bramley and the M621.

Delays were particularly severe on the M621 westbound near Leeds United’s Elland Road ground.

Martin Walker said on Facebook: “Proof again that #Leeds needs an updated traffic flow system – or more people using alternate forms of travel.”

Steve Terrington said: “Two hours from Garforth to Kirkstall and as soon as I arrive everything cleared.”

Chris Hall commented: “One road and the city’s at a standstill.”

Emily Gaspar-Philpott added: “I hope everyone is okay, but why does it take so little to bring Leeds to a standstill?

“I’m sure something similar happened a few months ago and meant people spent hours getting home.”
