Leeds supermarket standoff accused before magistrates

A man who allegedly brandished knives on a busy Leeds street sparking a dramatic standoff with police has appeared in court.

Michael Palmer, 32, appeared before Leeds Magistrates’ Court yesterday following the incident in Harehills on Sunday afternoon.

Yesterday, prosecutor Michael Vittis told the court that Palmer was alleged to have brandished knives on Harehills Lane before locking himself in a staff office at Sainsbury’s for over three hours

He was facing charges of affray, theft, assault and arson.

No application for bail was made and he was remanded in custody.

Palmer, of Brownhill Crescent, Harehills, will now appear before Leeds Crown Court at a later date.
