Leeds tennis coach charged with historic sex offences

Derek Munro, 58, was charged with 13 counts of sexual assault on Wednesday, police said.

The offences took place at a Leeds tennis club over a 24-year period from 1989 to 2013. Two of the alleged victims were under 16 at the time of the offences, a spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said.

Munro, of Alwoodley, will appear at Leeds Magistrates’ Court next month.

A police spokesperson said: “Derek Munro, aged 58, of Wigton Grove, Alwoodley, has been charged with 13 counts of sexual assault and is due to appear at Leeds Magistrates Court on Friday, November 6.

The charges relate to four females, two of who were aged under 16, and are reported to have occurred between 1989 and 2013.”

According to his website, the Derek Munro Tennis School was set up in Leeds in 1984.

Munro is a described as a “Scottish internationalist and a Scottish and Yorkshire champion” who has “coached players to junior international standard”.
